BWRG Visit to a Sikh Temple at Leicester

August 21, 2025 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

BWRG are organising a Private Tour of a Sikh temple in Leicester.

VISIT TO THE SIKH TEMPLE ON THURSDAY 21 AUGUST 2025

TO BE AT THE SIKH TEMPLE IN LEICESTER AT 10.45AM

Gurdwara Sahib

2 Sri Guru Ram Das Way

Hamilton

Leicester

LE5 1FY

Telephone Number  0116 303 2268

The opening of the first Sikh temple in Leicester in 1970, reflects the growth of the city’s Sikh population in the 1960s and 1970s. By 2011, the Sikh population of the city had risen to 14,457, representing 4.4% of the city’s population. This Sikh presence continues to contribute very significantly to the social, political and religious life of the city and is especially evident at the annual Vaisakhi celebrations, attracting thousands of people from across Leicester and the Midlands, to a parade through the streets of the city centre. Perhaps less well known are the nine gurdwaras currently operating in the city of Leicester. Gurdwaras are usually named after one of the Sikh gurus, and though they are often unobtrusive, they can always be recognised by the characteristic nishan sahib (flagpole), which denotes a place of worship.

Transport can be provided in the cars of Committee members.

(Before our Visit to the Sikh Temple, everyone attending will be invited to meet on Sunday 17 August, the time and Venue to be confirmed)

It takes one hour and fifteen minutes to travel from Lincoln to the Gurdwara in Leicester (assuming no traffic problems).  Recommended Start from Lincoln would be 9.15am

If you are interested in joining the trip please contact  Jasmit Kaur Phull <jkphull@hotmail.com>

You will travel on A46. On Melton Road, you will see Sainsbury’s Supermarket.  Turn Left here and carry on straight on the roundabouts. The post code will take you to the final roundabout and you may now receive a message from your SatNav saying ‘you have reached your destination’. After a very short drive you will see the Police Station (right hand side).  Turn Right here and then turn Left and you will see the entrance of the car park on the left hand side (see photo of the Gurdwara). The car park is quite large and there should be no problem for free parking.  The entrance of the Sikh Temple is facing the road.

We shall all meet near the entrance of the Sikh Temple, at the Nishaan Sahib (Orange Flag with the emblem). Please bring something to cover your head.  We remove our footwear before entering the Worship Room. (No worries if you forget to bring head cover, as they have spare head covers in the Gurdwara.  Apologies Gentlemen, no hats please, thank you for your understanding and co-operation 🙏) The entrance of the Gurdwara is on the same side as the flag.  (To identify a Gurdwara anywhere in the world, you will just have to look out for the orange flag).

The Secretary will be at the Gurdwara to welcome us.

In the Worship Room, when we walk straight towards The Holy Book, Guru Granth Sahib Ji, there is a donation box and it is optional for you to drop a coin or just feel free to join your hands and bow a little to show your respect to the Holy Book.

At the Worship place, you will be offered Parshaad (Oblation).  This is considered as a Blessing.  Accept this with both hands. Parshaad is sweet to taste and made of wheat flour, sugar and butter or ghee.  (Our grand daughter Eloise and I love this very much and sometimes have a double share too 😊).

When offered anything to eat, please use both hands together. Shoes can be worn in the dining area. Free lunch (Langar) will be offered to all.   (During Festivals in India, even millionaires stand in long queues to have Langar as it is a blessing to have Langar).  After lunch, some of you will return home and others may want to go shopping.  Belgrave Road is not far from the Sikh Temple.

If you would like to know more about Sikhism before your Visit to the Sikh Temple, please google these words and find out more.  Guru Nanak, The Ten Gurus, Guru Granth Sahib (Holy Book), Ek Onkar, Khanda, Langar, The Golden Temple in Amritsar. The Golden Temple’s langar (free meals) is the world’s largest free community kitchen, serving an average of 50,000 to 100,000 people daily.  On Sikh religious holidays and festivals, the number of meals served can exceed 100,000.  The LANGAR is known for its commitment to Equality, Serving anyone regardless of background, and is run entirely by Volunteers.
